Under the Licensing Act 2003 in the UK, you are required to have a personal licence if you plan to sell alcohol or authorise others to do so on your behalf.
To apply for a Personal Licence, you must first complete this Level 2 Award for Personal Licence Holders (Level 2 APLH), also known as the Personal Alcohol Licence or Pub Licence course.
Our Personal Licence course covers key topics such as the responsibilities of a licence holder, the Licensing Act 2003, how to ensure alcohol is sold responsibly, age verification, and the consequences of unlawful alcohol sales. It equips learners with the knowledge needed to uphold licensing laws and manage licensed premises effectively.
Approved and recognised by all local councils in England and Wales, this is the official qualification required for those applying for a Personal Licence to serve or sell alcohol.
A Personal Licence Holder can work in any place that sells alcohol, such as:
The APLH course has no specific entry requirements, meaning learners don't need any previous experience or qualifications to enrol. However, if you choose the online option, ensure you have a laptop or computer with a webcam and a reliable internet connection.
After finishing your personal licence course, you will take a 60-minute multiple-choice exam. To pass, you must achieve a score of 28 out of 40, which is 70%. Your course will cover all the essential information you need to successfully pass your exam.
Worried about passing the exam? Don’t be! It's straightforward and easy to pass, and we offer several free resources like mock exams and a study guide to help you succeed!
After successfully completing your Personal Licence course, you’ll receive a Level 2 Award for Personal Licence Holders (RQF) certificate, which is valid for life. We are accredited by Highfield Qualifications and Laser Learning Awards, whose certificates are accepted by all councils across the UK.

If you plan to sell alcohol in the UK, you need to apply for a personal licence, and to apply for one, you must first complete the personal licence course.
The Personal licence exam is quite simple. It’s a multiple-choice format, so you just select the right answer from four choices. To pass, you need to get 28 out of 40 correct. We provide mock exams to support your preparation, and if you don't succeed the first time, you can always retake it.
Yes, you can complete the APLH course online either through a live Zoom class or by studying at your own pace with our self-paced option.
If you choose the online option, it takes 3–5 working days to arrange and confirm your exam slot. Once your course is completed, our team will guide you through the booking process and provide full instructions for taking the exam remotely.
The personal licence costs £37, payable to your local council. This fee doesn’t cover the DBS check, which is approximately £30 and must be included with your application.
As of 1st of April 2015, personal licences no longer have an expiration date and are valid indefinitely, unless revoked or forfeited due to an offence.
All venues must appoint a designated premises supervisor (DPS) who is responsible for overseeing the proper management of alcohol sales. The DPS must hold a personal licence but is not required to be on the premises at all times.
