This module focuses on the legal duties and key UK regulations concerning safety harnesses, such as the Work at Height Regulations 2005, Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 (Amended 2022), and the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 19743.
It trains individuals to perform thorough visual and tactile user checks before every use, specifically inspecting the webbing for damage, stitching for fraying, buckles for function, and labels for readability.
The module covers the correct process for donning a safety harness (holding by the back D-ring, stepping into leg straps, pulling shoulder straps over arms, and aligning the chest strap and D-ring), as well as how to fit it snugly and securely without restricting movement.
Finally, it emphasises final safety harness checks, including vital buddy checks, to ensure all parts are secure and aligned before starting work.
This module focuses on safe practices while wearing the harness, including keeping it fully fastened, maintaining the D-ring position, watching for snag hazards, and never modifying the harness.
It provides detailed cleaning procedures using mild soap and lukewarm water with a soft cloth, followed by natural air drying. Guidance is given on handling wet harnesses, emphasising proper air drying away from heat, and correct storage techniques in a dry, ventilated space, away from sunlight, chemicals, and extreme temperatures.
The module also covers specific actions for dirty harnesses contaminated with substances like oil, paint, or unknown chemicals, often requiring immediate removal from service and reporting.
Finally, it outlines a daily safety routine encompassing pre-use inspection, correct donning/fitting, final checks, staying clipped-in, cleaning, and reporting issues.
This module prepares individuals for responding to a fall, detailing immediate actions such as raising the alarm, contacting emergency services, following site-specific rescue procedures, avoiding premature harness removal, and supporting the worker during suspension.
A key focus is understanding suspension trauma, its symptoms (dizziness, nausea, pale skin), the risks of loss of consciousness and fatal complications from delayed rescue, and the importance of post-rescue care.
The module concludes with quick tips and safety reminders for daily use, including reading the manufacturer's manual, checking fit over clothing, avoiding prolonged sun exposure, using mild cleaning soap, and replacing harnesses based on inspection results or expiry dates.
